The Blue Green Horizon in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a country filled with historic monuments, natural hot spots, and cultural landscapes. Out of these, Ambuluwawa tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country for years. This is an ideal place to admire the breathtaking beauty of nature and discover the horizon, where endless greenery meets the blue clear sky.
The importance of the Ambuluwawa tower is that once you climb the spiral staircase for nearly 1.5 to 2 hours you can enjoy an undisturbed, 360 view of the natural surrounding, covered with mesmerizing natural beauty including forests, rivers, and lakes.
The Ambuluwawa tower is 48 meters tall and situated on the peak of Ambuluwawa mountain in Gampola town of Sri Lanka. The mountain is situated 3560 meters above sea level and the tower is around 1000 feet above the closest town of Gampola. From the entrance to the Mountain peak, there’s around 3kms distance and you can go there by vehicle or on foot. The final part is the tower and it needs to be climbed slowly and carefully. Some people find it challenging to climb the narrow spiral stairs as those get narrower when you climb up further. Sometimes it can be risky for those who are afraid of heights and it’s a must to be cautious if you carry babies or kids.
Ambuluwawa is also high in bio diversity and you can identify 200 different plant varieties in this area. Since Ambuluwawa is located near the mountain region of the country, on the top of the tower, nearby mountain ranges can be seen clearly. This includes the plathora of mountain ranges. Few can be mentioned as the sacred Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) mountain where lord buddha kept his sacred footprint, Piduruthalagala mountain- the highest mountain of the country, and bio diversity hotspot-Knuckles Mountain Range.
Ambuluwawa tower was built in the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV and at that time country’s Capital was the city of Gampola. This is considered to be a Buddhist stupa (pagoda), usually built to worship Lord Buddha. Even though there are many Buddhist stupas (pagodas) around the country you cannot climb up them to the top. So this can be considered as one of the unique structures in the country, which may be served multiple purposes in the past.
Ambuluwawa is situated in Gampola city and it is around 120 km distance from Colombo Fort railway station. You can travel there by train or by vehicle.
Though it’s a challenging hike for some people, it’s guaranteed the view at the top won’t disappoint you. Once you reach the top, do not forget to take a few deep breaths to fill your lungs with fresh, healthy air coming through the endless sea of greenery.
