Social and Cultural Aspect of Kandy

Kandy is known as the King’s city. It is the last kingdom of Sri Lanka before the British Colonization. The city is rich with cultural heritage as well as the traditional importance.

The people inherent in Kandy is known as Kandiyan. They are usually proud of their ancestors and mostly decedents from the last King’s family or close alliance. Traditional Kandiyan are commonly the great-grandchildren of the war heroes. Most of their ancestors died during the battles against the British. The British army fought with guns and bullets. While Kandyan war heroes fought with Swords, Bow, and Arrows. They appreciate the courage and determination of their relatives, which is stronger than their weapons.

The fall of the Kandyan Kingdom dated back to 1848. The British invaded the coastal areas of Sri Lanka during 1818. They controlled the ports around the country, so as all the businesses. They couldn’t capture the capital, Kandy city, for more than 30 years, even with guns and bullets.

The Kingdom of Kandy couldn’t invade, mainly due to two reasons. The first reason is the geographical barrier. Kandy is known as the up-country or the hill-country. The city is surrounded by ranges of mountains. This includes the Knuckles Range, Hunnasgiriya, and…
